Reinstall Printer Software: Fully Remove and Fresh Install

Short answer: The fix for recurring connection and print failures is a clean reinstall: remove the old driver, delete leftover queues and files, restart, then install either the manufacturer software or, on most modern printers, a driverless connection. Driverless printing uses IPP Everywhere, which lets Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS and mobile devices find and print to a printer without vendor software. Uninstall first, restart, reinstall, then print a test page.

When a clean reinstall helps

When a printer starts failing for no clear reason, the fastest fix is often to remove its software completely and start over. A clean reinstall clears a corrupted driver, deletes a stuck print queue, removes a duplicate printer entry, and resets the connection between your computer and the machine.

Signs that a reinstall is worth trying before any other step: jobs sit in the queue without printing, the printer shows as offline while the network works, the wrong driver name appears under the model, or the computer lost the printer after an operating system update. If those symptoms show up on more than one computer, the problem is usually the printer or the network, not the driver, so check the offline printer guide as well.

Manufacturer driver or driverless

Before removing anything, decide what you will install afterward. Many printers still ship with a manufacturer driver and utility suite that gives you scan, fax, maintenance, and status tools. But the Printer Working Group defines IPP Everywhere, a standard that lets personal computers and mobile devices find and print to networked and USB printers without using vendor-specific software.

The PWG reports that 98% of all printers sold today support IPP/2.0 and DNS-SD, which are the building blocks of driverless printing. On most current models you can simply let the operating system discover the printer, add it with no downloaded software, and print. Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, and CUPS all support IPP Everywhere as clients. If your printer is Mopria certified, Android and Windows can also print to it directly.

You lose nothing essential by going driverless for basic printing, but you do lose the vendor utilities for scanning, faxing, and ink or toner status. For many home users that trade is fine. For a busy office, the vendor suite may be worth keeping. If you are unsure, reinstall the manufacturer software first and keep the driverless option as the fallback.

Prepare before you remove anything

Before the uninstall, note the printer's network name and how to find its IP address, because you will need them to reconnect. Check the printer's web interface or the vendor app for the current firmware, and update it if a newer version exists. A firmware update alone often resolves the same symptoms that a reinstall would.

Have the install file ready. You can usually download it from the manufacturer's support page, or you can skip it entirely and rely on driverless printing. Printing a test page before you uninstall also confirms whether the hardware works; if the printer prints from its own panel or another computer, the software on this machine is the problem.

Uninstall Windows and macOS drivers completely

On Windows, open Settings, go to Devices, then Printers and scanners, select the printer, and choose Remove device. The system removes the queue but often leaves the driver package behind. To clear it completely, open Print Management, find the print driver, and delete it. Then remove any leftover vendor utility from the Apps list. Restart before you reinstall.

On macOS, delete the printer in System Settings under Printers and Scanners. The operating system keeps printer drivers and preference panes, so also remove the vendor pkg or prefpane from the Applications and Preferences folders, and clear the print queue if you are comfortable with the terminal. Restart, then add the printer again.

In both systems, after the uninstall, check that no stray queue remains. A leftover queue is what usually makes the printer appear offline, because the computer still holds a connection to a device that no longer exists.

Install fresh: vendor software or driverless

After the restart you have two routes. The first is to download and run the current driver from the manufacturer's support page, then add the printer. The second is to let the OS add the printer using IPP Everywhere, which the Printer Working Group describes as printing to any network or USB printer without special software from the manufacturer. On Windows, choose Add a printer and pick your model when it appears; on macOS, the same discovery happens automatically.

If the printer is Mopria certified, Windows can also use the built-in Mopria support, and Android devices can print with the Mopria app. The difference between manufacturer and generic drivers matters less than it used to, because the driverless path uses the same IPP standard across operating systems.

Reconnect, test, and protect the setup

Once the printer is back, send a test page and check that the queue is empty. Set the default paper size and quality, and enable duplex by default if the model supports it. ENERGY STAR notes that certified imaging equipment is designed to wake from and return to sleep mode quickly, and that the factory energy-save settings are usually the most efficient; leave them on.

Useful extras from the ENERGY STAR guidance: print in draft mode for internal documents to save ink or toner, use the secure-print feature so jobs stay at the printer until you release them, and print double-sided by default. These habits keep the hardware healthy and reduce the chance that a poorly configured print job looks like a driver failure.

Keep the driver updated from now on by following the driver update guide. If the machine is an older model, remember that printer drivers are tied to the operating system version, so check compatibility after any major update.

When the printer is beyond repair

If the reinstall works but the printer still fails to print, the issue is hardware, not software. Before you give up, try a factory reset and a direct USB connection to rule out network problems. If the printer still will not cooperate, it may be time for a replacement.

When you retire a printer, the EPA recommends donating or recycling used electronics rather than throwing them in the trash. Many makers and local programs accept printers for recycling. Then look at the current all-in-one models and you will likely find that a new machine supports driverless setup out of the box, so the whole reinstall problem is less likely to return.

Questions

Do I need to uninstall the old driver before installing the new one?

Yes. Installing a new driver over a corrupted one often keeps the problem, because the old files and the print queue stay in place. Remove the device, delete the leftover driver and vendor software, restart, and then install fresh.

Will a reinstall clear a stuck print queue?

A clean reinstall removes the queue as part of removing the device. If jobs still hang after reinstalling, check the offline printer guide and confirm the printer's IP address has not changed.

Can I print without installing any manufacturer software?

On most recent printers, yes. The printer supports IPP Everywhere, which lets Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, and mobile devices discover and print to it without vendor software. If your model is Mopria certified, Android and Windows also print to it directly.

Is uninstalling different on macOS than on Windows?

The steps differ but the goal is the same. Windows stores drivers in Print Management, while macOS keeps printer queues in System Settings plus vendor preference panes that you remove separately. In both cases, restart after uninstalling.

What if the printer still fails after a clean reinstall?

If a clean reinstall and a firmware update do not fix it, the cause is likely hardware or the network. Try a direct USB connection and a factory reset. If the printer still will not print, it may be time to replace it and recycle the old unit.
